Clinical Immersion with Anusha Sehgal

Āyurveda & Menopause - Anusha Sehgal

Anusha Sehgal

Menopause is marked by the cessation of the menstrual cycle; however this transitional phase does not only impact the reproductive system, but the whole body. In Āyurveda, rajonivṛtti or menopause is not considered a disease but a natural progression into the next phase of life. Just as puberty starts the shift into adulthood where the body takes years to complete maturity, similarly during perimenopause the body undergoes almost a second puberty to facilitate the end of the menstrual cycle. Both stages induced changes in all systems of the body, including systemic symptoms. Perimenopause starts during the end phases of the pitta stage of life and is completed at the beginning of the vāta phase of life. Clinically we can observe both doṣas involved in the presentation of symptoms and its effects on various functions in the body. In this clinical discussion, we will explore two case studies of women ages 45 and 57 who present with systemic perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms and managed with classical Āyurveda. One case shows a predominance of pitta vikṛti (aggravation) whereas the other has a combination of pitta vāta vikṛti (aggravation).
