Clinical Immersion with Vaidya Karthik Krishnan

Decoding Ama: An Ayurvedic Approach to Chronic Liver Disease

Vaidya Karthik Krishnan

Liver cirrhosis is a complex, progressive disease condition in which Agni (digestive–metabolic fire), Ama (toxic metabolic residue), and Dhātu-kṣaya (tissue depletion) unfold in a chain reaction, steadily compromising an individual’s health and, over time, becoming potentially life-threatening. In this Clinical Immersion, we examine multiple real-world presentations of liver cirrhosis—each with its own unique pattern of progression—and study how they can be effectively managed through time-tested Ayurvedic clinical principles. While many of these cases are broadly labelled in modern medicine as autoimmune or non-alcoholic liver diseases, classical Ayurveda offers a more nuanced framework. It expands the understanding of Ama beyond a simple, static toxin. Instead of viewing Ama as a fixed pathological substance, this program emphasizes its dynamic, evolving nature—how it circulates, interacts with weakened tissues, and drives chronic illness.

Through this lens, participants learn how to:

Reassess the role of Ama in chronic liver disorders

Understand its movement, transformation, and influence on systemic health

Apply precise, classical Ayurvedic logic to choose interventions

Tailor treatment strategies to the stage, pattern, and underlying dosha-dhātu imbalance of each case

This immersion aims to show how deep Ayurvedic reasoning, when applied correctly, can provide clarity and clinical direction even in advanced conditions like cirrhosis.
