Part 1: Western Understanding of the Nervous System— We'll explore the foundational concepts of the nervous system from a Western medical perspective. You'll learn about the classification of the nervous system into the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), including their key components: the brain, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves. We'll also cover the sensory and motor systems, and dive into the somatic and autonomic divisions, highlighting the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The class will introduce the function of neurotransmitters and neurons, essential to understanding how the nervous system communicates and controls the body.

Understanding Sharira Rachana: Ayurvedic Perspective on the Nervous System—
We’ll explore the Ayurvedic understanding of the nervous system, emphasizing its functional flow over structural anatomy. We’ll compare Western anatomical views with Ayurveda’s focus on physiology, including the concepts of Sukshma Sharir (subtle body) and Sthula Sharir (gross body). You’ll learn how the Majja Dhatu (bone marrow and nervous tissue) and Doshas, particularly Vata, govern the body’s nervous functions through the Majjavaha Srotas. We will also cover key Ayurvedic structures like Shira, Mastishka, Dhamani, Sira, and Marma, and explore how Buddhi (intellect) and Smruthi (memory) function within this system.

Vata Vyadhi Samprapti: Pathogenesis of Vata Disorders—This class provides a detailed road map of the pathogenesis (Samprapti) of Vata-related disorders. We will explore the causative factors (Hetu) and their role in the development of disease, along with the progression of symptoms from premonitory signs (Purva Rupa) to full manifestations (Rupa). By understanding the qualities of Vata and its imbalances, you’ll learn how to recognize the symptoms of Vata disorders and apply key Ayurvedic principles for treatment (Chikitsa). This class is essential for grasping the intricacies of managing Vata Vyadhi. -

Additionally, we’ll cover the importance of diet and lifestyle practices in supporting Ayurvedic treatments for long-term health and wellness.

Course Instructors
Dr. Rammohan Rao
Rammohan Rao, PhD, CAP, RYT, holds a PhD in Neuroscience and serves as a Chief scientist at Apollo Health, focusing on a systems-based, integrative approach to treat Neurodegenerative diseases. Ram is a NAMA board-certified Ayurvedic Practitioner (AP), a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) by Yoga Alliance, and teaches Ayurveda at the California College of Ayurveda. Ram has published several articles in scientific and Yoga/Ayurveda journals and is a featured speaker in several meetings and symposia. Ram is also the author of the best-selling book Good Living Practices-The best from Ayurveda, Yoga and Modern Science For Achieving Optimal Health, Happiness and Longevity.
Manju Kolli
Manju Kolli M.S, Rph, A.D is a NAMA board-certified Ayurvedic Doctor based out of San Francisco, Bay Area. She is the founding director of Ayurhitam, an Ayurvedic wellness clinic. Manju also has over 15 years of experience serving as a Clinical pharmacist in the allopathic medical field. This makes her approach unique in selecting a proper treatment for every client. Her area of expertise is Women and Kids health through the lens of Ayurveda. She brings a unique voice to the field with her past career as a clinical pharmacist and her dedication to demonstrate clinical effectiveness of Ayurveda in our times. Her vision is to bring Ayurveda its lost glory and prove its effectiveness as a proper science. She is the current President of the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine.
