Warming Lentil Soup with Cumin & Dried Mint

This comforting lentil soup supports digestion while gently warming the body and calming the nervous system. Cumin kindles agni, while dried mint adds a light, uplifting finish that keeps the dish balanced and refreshing.

Serves 4–6

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red or brown lentils, rinsed

  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil of choice

  • 1 teaspoon whole cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon dried mint

  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander

  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric

  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, grated

  • 6 cups water or vegetable broth

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook until aromatic.

  2. Add ginger, ground cumin, coriander, turmeric, and dried mint. Stir briefly.

  3. Add lentils and water or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes, until lentils are soft.

  4. Serve immediately garnished with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
